Game Description
You'd easily be forgiven if you experience a case of while playing Kane's Wrath. Yes, the expansion to last year's Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars packs a fair amount of new content. At its heart is a 13-mission single-player campaign, along with six new subfactions and a slick new global conquest campaign. Despite this, it feels eerily familiar. Kane's Wrath doesn't just feel like you're playing Tiberium Wars again, but the nagging feeling that also haunted C&C 3 returns. Replace the 3D looks with 2D graphics and swap the high-res HD video with lower-quality video and the gameplay is virtually indistinguishable from its original progenitor of more than 15 years ago. Kane's Wrath hews closely to the standards of the series. There are fast, brutal real-time strategy battles that are intercut with live-action cinematics and cutscenes. Joe Kucan reprises his famous role as Kane, leader of the evil Brotherhood of Nod. Since this is an expansion, the rest of the cast isn't as large or as varied as it was in Tiberium Wars, but it's still pretty respectable with the additions of sci-fi veterans like Carl Lumbly and Natasha Henstridge. They play lieutenants of Kane who each have their own agenda.

Generals + Zero Hour - Torrent
Game Description
Command & Conquer series moved along in a new direction with the release of Generals. Gone were the crazy mad scientist stories with cheesy actors and live action cutscenes. They were replaced by in-game cutscenes and a "real world" setting pitting the US and China up against a common terrorist foe called the GLA. While the weapons are still wacky in some cases, the situations almost have a present-day feel considering the war on terror that insists on happening. Generals was a breath of fresh air that the series needed with exciting gameplay, big weapons, plenty of strategy, and a lot of well designed missions. The expansion, Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour is a big one adding more units, more scenarios, and more fun that fans of the parent title will have a hard time not enjoying.
First off, you've been seeing this whole 30 new units campaign going on, and really, that's some marketing BS. There aren't 30 new units to play with. There are new units on each side and some modified versions of other units that can be used when playing as one of the specialized Generals such as the Emperor Tank, that's basically a more powerful version of the Overlord. Yes, technically they're a bit different, but the ad campaign has been a bit misleading on that account. It's like saying the blue zombie and the red zombie in Diablo II were really different creatures. Regardless of this, Zero Hour is a damn fun game that adds a lot of gameplay and hours even if there aren't really 30 totally unique new units in the game.
From a graphics and sound stand point, Zero Hour remains true to Generals with slick visuals in terms of texture, lighting, and effects. Superweapons continue to impress and the new heat wave effect for the US microwave tanks is a pretty good one, even if it can make things a bit confusing on the battlefield occasionally when you have a few of them in your army. Sound is equally good with nice sound effects for combat and ambient sounds (although some of the cities seem to have an awful lot of loud angry cats running around) as well as the same half rock, half symphonic score playing in the background of your battles. Voice acting still makes me laugh in a lot of cases and its still sometimes difficult to tell whether I'm laughing for the right reasons.

C&C GENERALS-COMPRESSED -MEDIAFIRE-180MB
Every now and again, I remember why I like real-time strategy games so much. Now that the advancing horde of unholy clones has all but been demolished, there's a much more refined, strategically sound, and quality bunch of titles in this genre coming out. Quality, not quantity, I say. And a great example of this is the beautifully designed Command & Conquer Generals that has certainly put me back in the strategy saddle. Before we get to the meat of the review, be sure to check out our exclusive video review of the game as well.
Generals takes a big step back from the Command & Conquer series of old, focusing not on the machinations of one evil man with a super evil plan, but instead on more "realistic" global issues of today while maintaining the creativity and fun of unit and weapon design the series has always had. The game focuses on the growing threat of the Global Liberation Army (GLA). Both China and the US are having problems with the group that sees both of the superpowers as a threat to their freedom. The imperialist scum must all die. Through the three campaigns and multiplayer battles, you'll have the chance to fight to save the world from the terrorist threat or bring a whole lot of pain to the world via a rather large toxic payload.
Westwood and EA decided to move away from the silly cutscenes of old and instead stick with a more mature style. All scenes use the in game engine to good effect although they use a Matrix style camera for too many of the explosions. There are no main characters to fart around with this time around, instead focusing on the war and the fact that while there are heroes, it's no one man or woman that conquers the enemy. It's a good move for the series and while some people might miss past attempts at character driven fiction, Generals manages to stay true to the series with its gameplay and faction styles.

Age of Kings typified this style of gaming in many respects, but it innovated and improved the style in many others, establishing the template for untold numbers of historic real-time strategy game to come. Coming off the successful spin-off that was Age of Mythology, Ensemble Studios is back with another installment in the series that put the developer's name on the map. Age of Empires III advances the series hundreds of years into the future, trading swordsmen and catapults for musketeers and cannons, while keeping the series' signature formula basically intact. What's more, the game features some gorgeous visuals and an interesting, inventive twist in its persistent "home city" system. So it's unfortunate that the actual meat-and-potatoes combat of Age of Empires III didn't turn out better, since what ought to be the most fun and exciting part of the game is actually the part that feels like it's seen the fewest improvements.
Make no mistake, Age of Empires III is still an impressive game overall. But fans with fond memories of the previous installment will be left feeling nostalgic for that game. Part of the reason may be purely subjective. The colonial setting of Age of Empires III, which focuses on hypothetical conflicts between European powers vying for control over the New World (that is, an unfettered North and South America), presents a subtler culture clash than, say, samurai fighting Persian war elephants. And the transition through five different ages that's presented in the game, culminating in the industrial age (when locomotives and mass production became a reality), aren't drastically different in gameplay terms, since the magic of gunpowder is available from the get-go. Nevertheless, one look at either Age III's majestic galleons firing all broadsides or horse-drawn cannons readying a deadly payload ought to be all the convincing you need that this is a welcomed direction for the series to take.

Red Alert 2 is one of the most polished, best-conceived, and downright enjoyable real-time strategy games in recent memory. There's an amazing depth to the tactics of the game, a good range of missions in the single player campaign and a kind of slightly ridiculous aspect to the story that lets you now that the game is supposed to be fun. Having said that I should caution you that Red Alert 2 does not offer the same kind of revolution in basic game design that so many of us expected of Westwood's last sequel, Tiberian Sun. This is not the 'next big thing' in strategy games and it certainly won't have the impact on the genre that early Westwood titles did. But what Red Alert 2 is, is one of the finest explorations of what can be done without taking the genre beyond its present limitations.
The game is still about harvesting resources to build structures to buy units, but what seems tired and worn-out in other games is inspired in this game. Granted, it's a formula but it's a formula because it works and only Starcraft and Age of Empires have done it as well. A large part of the success of Red Alert 2 comes from its smooth control system, comfortable menus and intuitive balancing. While it does add a few impressive gimmicks (garrisoning units in buildings and tech structures to name two), Red Alert 2 stands out because it's completely familiar to us while still being fresh.
One of the most rewarding and hardest to quantify factors of RA2 is unit balance. And when you've got three separate theaters in which to operate, unit balance becomes that much more difficult. The units in RA2 are an amazing mix of land, sea and air forces. And better than not having any of the units be totally worthless, the folks at Westwood have gone out of their way to make sure that each of the units has a particular role to play in your overall strategy. Let's just take the sea units for example. The Allies can produce Carriers that are very slow but can launch repeated attacks against distant enemy installations. Destroyers must accompany the Carriers to defend them from Sub attacks. Aegis Cruisers provide a convenient air defense while the undetectable Dolphins protect against Soviet Squids.
The game also comes with numerous special weapons of a suitably fantastic nature. The Allies have access to a Weather Control Device that rains (literally) thunderous destruction on your enemies. Simply pick a target, sit back and watch the clouds roll in. The Chronosphere is a little more sophisticated than the Weather Controller is. It permits you to shift units (yours or your enemies) from one area of the battlefield to another instantaneously. The Soviets have a Nuclear Missile that can erase large sections of your base in an instant as well as an Iron Curtain device that can render vehicles and structures invulnerable for a short time. In the interests of balance, all players are automatically alerted when one of these structures is built and are given a countdown to let them know when the device will come online. Additionally, the shroud is removed from around the superweapons so all players can have a chance to take them out. I was surprised that the superweapons were so well balanced. They can certainly win a game for you, but it's also possible to rally after a superweapon attack and take the fight to your enemy.
